The 2011 Managers' Boot Camp will be conducted as a pre-conference workshop, immediately before the ASHP Conference for Leaders in Health-System Pharmacy. This year's program will feature instructional presentations and a workshop consisting of facilitated team-based projects and presentations.
Pharmacists promoted into management positions often find themselves challenged by tasks and responsibilities for which they lack specific training. While strong clinical acumen is an important competency for pharmacy managers, there are many other critical skills pharmacists must possess in order to be effective managers and leaders. Managers must understand how to build and leverage key relationships within the organization, build effective teams within their departments, lead and develop staff members, establish and implement new programs and services, track performance, and develop strategic plans for their departments. They must also be skilled at presenting ideas to senior leadership and understanding the factors that drive decisions of health system administrators in order to expand the services and contributions of the pharmacy department.
The 2011 ASHP Managers' Boot Camp is designed for managers, directors and clinical leaders who are interested in developing the skills necessary to advance new services and programs within their organizations. This session of the Boot Camp will focus on the following core areas:
- Achieving service excellence – Defining success in today's new health care paradigm.
- Accountability – Managing and measuring to promote practice advancement your stakeholders will recognize and your patients will appreciate.
- Action-oriented strategic planning – Turning environmental changes into sustainable services and outcomes.
- Alignment of skills and strengths – Team building to meet the demands of tomorrow.

Registration is required in order to attend. Participants do not have to be registered for the Sixteenth ASHP Conference for Leaders in Health-System Pharmacy to attend the Boot Camp. Attendance is limited, so register early to secure your spot! Previous years have sold out!
Online registration is available for attendees who wish to register for both the Manager's Boot Camp and the ASHP Conference for Leaders in Health-System Pharmacy. Attendees who are not planning to attend the ASHP Conference for Leaders in Health-System Pharmacy must register by fax or telephone.
Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of this application-based continuing education activity, participants should be able to
- Analyze the impact of health-care reform and how it will change necessary financial skills that pharmacy leaders will need to measure and communicate business outcomes.
- List key financial and quality indicators that influence health-system administrators' decisions and how pharmacy leaders can align strategic planning to impact institutional goals.
- Develop and apply strategies for advancing pharmacy services through staff engagement and effective personnel management.
- Identify the steps required to communicate the value of pharmacy to senior leadership and other key stake holders in the hospital and health system.
- Demonstrate the steps to successfully organize and implement a business plan for new or expanded services.
Continuing Education Accreditation
The American Society of Health-System Pharmacists is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education as a provider of continuing pharmacy education. This activity provides 7.0 hours (0.7 CEUs) of continuing education credit (ACPE activity # 204-000-11-426-L04P).
Attendees must complete a Continuing Pharmacy Education Request online and may immediately print their official statements of continuing pharmacy education credit at the ASHP CE Center at http://ce.ashp.org following the activity.
