Patients with hemophilia A (both hereditary and acquired), are a challenge to treat. It is important that pharmacists understand the epidemiology and pathophysiology of hemophilia A, so they can devise strategies for treatment. Several new long-acting factors are now available, with the potential to improve therapy and improve adherence. This activity will provide an overview of the epidemiology and pathophysiology of hemophilia A and review current and emerging therapies with respect to selection of appropriate treatments, dosing, monitoring, and potential complications.

Learning Objectives

  • Discuss the epidemiology and pathophysiology of hemophilia A.
  • Review the available long-acting factor replacement products, including patient-specific factors to consider with their use.
  • Explain established care models and standards and criteria for the care of persons with hemophilia A.
  • Describe important hematologic and pharmacologic monitoring parameters to employ when treating patients with hemophilia A.
