Program Summary
Parenteral nutrition (PN) is one of few remaining therapies that is currently being customized on patient-by-patient basis despite the possibility that over 60% of patients could benefit from standardized therapies. Recent regulatory changes are also focusing on PN as an area that should be targeted for patient safety initiatives (e.g., National Patient Safety Goals) and interests in improving the nutrition of hospitalized patients has heightened interest in integrating premixed or standardized parenteral nutrition into practice.
This educational activity will review how regulatory changes and existing standards relate to parenteral nutrition, the role of standardized parenteral nutrition products in health care today, and the trend toward the future of parenteral nutrition. The program will include data and experience from both a large academic medical center, and a small to mid-sized hospital.
Target Audience
This program is designed for pharmacists and pharmacy technicians who are interested in learning how standardized formulations and premixed parenteral nutrition can improve nutrition services in a variety of practice settings.
