Program Description

Despite advances in therapies for postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV), preventing and managing it remains a challenge. Preventing PONV remains a top priority for clinicians because there are instances in which PONV could prove catastrophic (e.g., head and neck surgeries). It is important for pharmacists to be aware of new methods for preventing or rapidly rescuing patients from PONV. All members of the health-care team have a role to play in identifying patients and procedures that put patients at risk as well as ensuring that
patients receive appropriate therapy.

This program will review the patient characteristics and procedures that put patients at risk for developing PONV as well as provide an overview of the various treatment options for preventing and managing PONV. Current consensus guidelines on preventing and managing PONV will be reviewed in depth and strategies for successfully implementing them in the practice setting will be explained.
