Overview

With full implementation in 2006 of the Medicare Prescription Drug Improvement and Modernization Act of 2003 (MMA), pharmacists in a variety of practice settings will play an increasingly important role in the treatment of patients with the metabolic syndrome or who are at risk for developing the metabolic syndrome and cardiovascular disease. Thus, it is important for pharmacists to have a broad understanding of all aspects associated with managing cardiometabolic risk, including lipid management, weight reduction, management of hypertension, glycemic control, and other factors.

This program will start with a brief review of the metabolic syndrome and cardiometabolic risk factors, focusing especially on the relationships among the risk factors. Current guidelines for managing cardiometabolic risk will also be described. The program’s primary focus, however, will be on new and emerging evidence related to the treatment of metabolic syndrome and cardiometabolic risk. The faculty will present that clinical evidence, then put it into practice by discussing a case scenario that revolves around a patient newly diagnosed with metabolic syndrome. Strategies for reduction of weight and visceral fat and promotion of physical activity will be considered since these are first-line treatment recommendations for managing metabolic syndrome and reducing cardiometabolic risk factors.  The question of whether to initiate drug therapy will also be considered.

Target Audience

This continuing education program is beneficial for pharmacists and certified diabetes educators in both acute-care and ambulatory settings who care for patients with the metabolic syndrome and cardiometabolic risk factors.
