Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of this program, participants should be able to:
- Describe the pathophysiology of
post-operative ileus (POI).
- List two supportive options for treating POI and the evidence that supports
each option.
- Discuss the efficacy and toxicity of three classes of medications that have been utilized for postoperative ileus.
- Distinguish between the mechanisms
of action of peripherally active opioid receptor antagonists from currently available drug therapies for the
treatment of POI.
- List two factors that will may be considered when reviewing the mu-receptor antagonists for formulary addition.
