PROGRAM OVERVIEW
The application of statistical accuracy assessments to the compounding
of total parenteral nutrient formulations is a new challenge
for pharmacists in today’s health-system environment.
Medication safety initiatives urge pharmacists to lead the way
by incorporating sophisticated technology with rigorous quality
improvement programs in all areas of pharmacy practice. There
are risks inherent in the compounding of parenteral nutrient
formulations, although the development and widespread use of
automated compounding devices has led to improved compounding
accuracy. This symposium will educate attendees on the significance
of statistical accuracy combined with clinical judgment when
compounding parenteral nutrient formulations. Pharmacists will
also learn to evaluate accuracy statements when using automated
compounding equipment. Clinical examples demonstrating the different
compounding methods available to pharmacists will be presented,
and professional guidelines for the safe preparation of parenteral
nutrient admixtures will be reviewed.
