	National Patient Safety Awareness Week Radio Tour
	Summary: During the week of March 2nd through the 8th in 2008, ASHP and the ASHP Research and Education Foundation marked National Patient Safety Awareness Week with a radio tour. The radio tour emphasized the pharmacists' role in medication safety. Dr. Scott T. Micek, a clinical pharmacist at Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis, was interviewed by 17 radio stations, including CNN Radio. The interviews were designed to educate consumers about the vital patient-care role pharmacists play in hospitals and health systems. This podcast includes the interview with WIBW in Topeka, Kansas, and the interview with Metro Networks Minneapolis in Minneapolis, Minnesota. 	Pharmacy Technician Workforce: Trained, Tested, Trusted
	Summary: New responsibilities for pharmacy technicians are being identified throughout the profession of pharmacy, transitioning the position of pharmacy technician from a job to a career. 	Improving Patient Care in the Hospital Setting: Applying Current Therapeutic Trends and Clinical Evidence to Transfusion Protocols
	Summary: The therapeutic necessity for blood transfusions is well established; however, the transfusion of human plasma-derived components is not without drawbacks. There is significant expense associated with the testing, storage, and transfusion of blood products. Blood transfusions also pose a number of safety risks. The challenges and clinical shortcomings of blood transfusions have led clinicians to seek strategies to reduce blood transfusions. Those strategies include anemia management, blood conservation, the use of hemostatic agents and therapeutic alternatives to blood transfusion, and the development of hospital-specific transfusion guidelines. There are many examples in the medical literature documenting improvements in patient care and health care resource utilization associated with the systematic development and institution-wide implementation of evidence-based, interdisciplinary treatment guidelines and protocols. These issues and other important topics in transfusion medicine will be addressed in this program. 	Summary: This program provides an overview of the prevalence, morbidity, and mortality in adults associated with herpes zoster, influenza, meningococcal disease, pertussis, and HPV infection. Recent changes to the ACIP recommendations for immunization and information about the efficacy, safety, and administration of new immunization products also will be discussed. The status of research efforts to develop immunization products with a large potential public health benefit will be briefly described. 	The Implementation of Antimicrobial Stewardship Using a Multidisciplinary Approach
	Summary This program will describe the relationships between inappropriate antimicrobial use, antimicrobial resistance, and increased morbidity, mortality, and hospital length of stay. Pharmacy expenditures and factors affecting reimbursement will be addressed. The potential impact of antimicrobial stewardship programs on the emergence and transmission of antimicrobial-resistant microorganisms also will be discussed. Challenges associated with antimicrobial stewardship program implementation and examples of successful multidisciplinary team approaches to antimicrobial stewardship will be provided. 	The Incretin Concept: A Case-study Approach to Glycemic Control in Type 2 Diabetes
	Summary This program discusses trends in the prevalence of type 2 diabetes and strategies to achieve goals for glycemic control. The role of incretins in postprandial glycemic control in healthy persons and the incretin abnormalities that contribute to type 2 diabetes will be explained. The mechanisms of action, routes of administration, efficacy, and safety of currently available and investigational incretin analogs and DPP-4 enzyme inhibitors in patients with type 2 diabetes will be described. 	Beyond Statins: Persistent Myths & Current Controversies in Managing Dyslipidemia
	Summary This program will provide a brief review of the relationship between dyslipidemia, the metabolic syndrome, and CHD and current NCEP guidelines for treating dyslipidemia. The importance of HDL cholesterol in determining CHD risk and the impact of raising levels on risk for CHD will be described. The role of statins, niacin, fibrates, and other agents in the treatment of dyslipidemia, including effects of the drugs on patients with mixed dyslipidemia, type 2 diabetes, and the metabolic syndrome, also will be presented. Persistent myths and unresolved controversies in dyslipidemia management that are not addressed in the NCEP guidelines will be discussed. 	Update on the Chronic Management of COPD: Optimizing Patient Outcomes
	Summary: This program will provide an overview of COPD, including a description of the natural course of disease progression. The program will describe current pharmacological approaches as well as the importance of the health care team in managing the disease across the continuum of care. The role of the health care team in teaching patients about COPD, available devices, and self-management will be discussed. Patient cases and audience response system technology was used during the interactive live session to illustrate strategies for long-term management of COPD. The results are included in the podcast. 	Therapeutic Update on Management of Postoperative Ileus
	Summary: This educational activity for physicians provides an update on the therapeutic management of postoperative ileus (POI). The pathophysiology of POI will be reviewed, and particular emphasis will be placed on the impact of surgery type, anesthesia, and analgesia, and other components of enhanced-recovery protocols on POI will be presented.
