Learning Objectives

After participating in this application-based educational activity, participants should be able to

  • List three characteristics of the ideal inhaled anesthetic agent and compare and contrast currently available anesthetic inhaled agents.
  • Discuss the suitability of various inhaled anesthetic agents based on patient-specific considerations.
  • Explain how a patient-specific factor influences the selection of an inhaled anesthetic agent.
  • Describe the factors that should be taken into consideration when evaluating the costs of these agents and compare and contrast various pharmacoeconomic analyses used for inhalation anesthetic agents.
  • Name an unmodifiable factor and a modifiable factor that impact the cost of inhaled anesthetic vapor.
  • Explain how changing the modifiable factor affects the cost of inhaled anesthetic vapor.
  • Identify the essential factors to consider in evaluating the overall cost of using inhalation anesthetic agents and strategies for controlling the cost of these agents in health systems.
