Managers' Boot Camp

Sunday, October 19 — preconference workshop — NEW THIS YEAR!

Pharmacists promoted into management positions often find themselves challenged by tasks and responsibilities for which they lack formal training. While strong clinical acumen is an important competency for pharmacy managers, there are many other critical skills pharmacists must possess in order to be effective managers. Managers must understand how to build key relationships within the organization, build effective teams within their departments, lead and develop their staff members, track performance, and develop strategic plans for their departments. They must also be skilled at presenting ideas to senior leadership in order to expand the services and contributions of the pharmacy department.

The 2007 ASHP Conference for Leaders in Health-System Pharmacy featured a two-part New Managers' Boot Camp session. This session, which filled to capacity quickly, met with rave reviews. Building upon the 2007 session, faculty members have developed an intensive curriculum of twelve core areas designed to train managers and clinical leaders for management roles. The curriculum will also help seasoned managers sharpen their skills in key areas, to keep up with the ever-changing landscape in health-system pharmacy practice. The Managers' Boot Camp workshop will be held immediately before the Thirteenth Annual ASHP Conference for Leaders in Health-System Pharmacy. This full-day program will feature instructional presentations, facilitated workshop sessions, exercises, and panel/audience discussions.

The ASHP Managers' Boot Camp is designed for clinical leaders and managers who are interested in developing the skills necessary to advance new services and programs within their organizations. This session of the Boot Camp will focus on the following four core areas:

The ASHP Managers' Boot Camp will be held Sunday, October 19, 2008, from 8:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. Attendees may receive up to 8.0 hours (0.8 CEUs) of continuing pharmacy education credit for participating in the workshop.

New and ImprovedBecause the Boot Camp curriculum comprises twelve key areas of focus, this year’s workshop will not be a replication of the two-part workshop held at the 2007 Conference.
