2009 ASHP Managers’ Boot Camp

Pharmacists promoted into management positions often find themselves challenged by tasks and responsibilities for which they lack specific training. While strong clinical acumen is an important competency for pharmacy managers, there are many other critical skills pharmacists must possess in order to be effective managers and leaders. Managers must understand how to build and leverage key relationships within the organization, build effective teams within their departments, lead and develop their staff members, establish and implement new programs and services, track performance, and develop strategic plans for their departments. They must also be skilled at presenting ideas to senior leadership and understanding the factors that drive decisions of health-system administrators in order to expand the services and contributions of the pharmacy department.

Last year, the ASHP Conference for Leaders in Health-System Pharmacy featured a full day of interactive learning for the Managers’ Boot Camp session. The 2008 session quickly filled to capacity and got rave reviews. Faculty members developed an intensive curriculum addressing the following areas: Leading and Developing People, Navigating Health Care Organizations, Developing a Strategic Practice Vision for the Pharmacy Department, Leveraging the National Quality Agenda, and Regulatory Mandates to Advance Pharmacy Services.

The 2009 ASHP Managers’ Boot Camp workshop will be held immediately before the Fourteenth Annual ASHP Conference for Leaders in Health-System Pharmacy. This year’s program will feature instructional presentations and a workshop consisting of facilitated team-based projects and presentations.

The Managers’ Boot Camp is designed for managers, directors, and clinical leaders who are interested in developing the skills necessary to advance new services and programs within their organizations. This session of the Boot Camp will focus on the following core areas:

  1. Financial Management and Key Drivers of the C-Suite
  2. Productivity Measurement and Managing Total Enterprise Costs
  3. Creating and Defining Your Value Proposition
  4. Executing Change—Project Management and Team Leadership Skills
  5. Putting it All Together—Mini Team Projects and Presentations

The Managers’ Boot Camp will be held Sunday, October 18, 2009, from 8:00 AM until 4:30 PM. Attendees may receive up to 7.0 hours (0.7 CEUs) continuing pharmacy education credit for participating in the workshop.
