Learning Objectives

After the conclusion of this knowledge-based educational activity, participants should be able to
  • Identify clinical controversies and barriers leading to suboptimal use of guideline-directed medical therapy (GDMT) regimens for patients with heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF).
  • Develop plans to optimize GDMT regimens for patients with HFrEF. 
  • Adopt strategies to overcome barriers to implementing successful transitions of care programs for patients with HFrEF hospitalized for acute heart failure.

Robert J. DiDomenico, Jr., is an associate professor in the Department of Pharmacy Practice and affiliate member of the Center for Pharmacoepidemiology and Pharmacoeconomic Research at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) College of Pharmacy. Dr. DiDomenico is also a cardiovascular clinical pharmacist at the University of Illinois Hospital with a practice site in inpatient cardiology and serves as Residency Program Director for the UIC PGY2 Cardiology Pharmacy residency. 

He received his Pharm.D. and completed three years of post-doctoral training (Pharmacy Practice Residency, Cardiovascular Pharmacotherapy Fellowship) at UIC. 

Dr. DiDomenico’s research focus is optimizing the use of evidence-based medications in patients with cardiovascular disease, particularly those with heart failure and coronary artery disease. He has authored more than 100 peer-reviewed articles, book chapters, and abstracts. He is an active member of several organizations achieving fellowship designation in the American College of Clinical Pharmacy, the Heart Failure Society of America, and American College of Cardiology.

Tien M.H. Ng, Pharm.D., BCPS-AQ Cardiology, FACC, FCCP, FHFSA, is Associate Professor of Clinical Pharmacy and Medicine in the School of Pharmacy and Keck School of Medicine at the University of Southern California (USC) in Los Angeles, California. He is also Director of the PGY2 pharmacy residency in Cardiology and Vice Chair in the Titus Family Department of Clinical Pharmacy. In addition, Dr. Ng practices as a clinical specialist with the Cardiac Intensive Care Unit team at the Los Angeles County + USC Medical Center. Prior to joining USC, Dr. Ng was on faculty at the University of Nebraska Medical Center.

Dr. Ng completed his Bachelor of Science degree in pharmacy from Dalhousie University in Halifax, Canada and his Doctor of Pharmacy degree from Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan. He completed a Cardiovascular Pharmacotherapy Fellowship from the University of Utah in Salt Lake City, Utah. He is a board certified pharmacotherapy specialist (BCPS) with added qualifications in cardiology (AQ Cardiology).

Dr. Ng’s primary research interests focus on heart failure pathophysiology and pharmacotherapy. He has published numerous peer-reviewed manuscripts, abstracts and book chapters related to heart failure pharmacotherapy. Dr. Ng has also been an invited speaker at national pharmacy and cardiology scientific meetings. 

Dr. Ng has been conferred Fellow of the American College of Cardiology (ACC), the American College of Clinical Pharmacy (ACCP), and the Heart Failure Society of America (HFSA), and has been an active member of ACC, ACCP, HFSA, the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP), and the American Heart Association (AHA). He is a past recipient of the HFSA Clinical/Integrative Physiology new investigator award. Dr. Ng was also selected to and currently sits on the inaugural Board of Pharmaceutical Specialties (BPS) Cardiology Specialty Council.
