Target Audience
This continuing pharmacy education activity was planned to meet the needs of pharmacists in a variety of practice settings, including large and small health systems, outpatient clinics, managed-care organizations, long-term care facilities, academia, and supportive roles and pharmacists who are interested in antimicrobial stewardship and antimicrobial resistance.
Webinar Overview
Antimicrobial resistance in hospitals leads to increased morbidity, mortality, hospital lengths of stay, and healthcare costs and is now a major public health crisis. Working with a multidisciplinary team to implement antimicrobial stewardship is recommended in clinical practice guidelines by the Infectious Diseases Society of America and the Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America. Clinical pharmacists with infectious diseases training can play key roles in this effort.
Challenges associated with the implementation of antimicrobial stewardship programs are common and can result in serious implications for a health system's infectious disease-related outcomes. This activity will answer questions posed by pharmacists who are involved in the implementation of antimicrobial stewardship programs (ASPs). Using active learning for participants, strategies will be explored for navigating the challenges involved with successful implementation of a multidisciplinary ASP.
Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of this knowledge-based continuing pharmacy education activity, participants should be able to
- Describe at least one controversy related to the implementation of antimicrobial stewardship programs in health systems.
- Discuss at least one area of emerging research related to the management of antimicrobial resistance in health systems.
- Identify at least two ways in which pharmacists can help improve the quality of antimicrobial stewardship programs.
